In IUSTITIA was established in 2009 as the first (and still only) legal organization of its kind to focus on bias violence in its full extent. In IUSTITIA raises the topic of bias violence into public awareness, the professional and academic discourses, and political debate. We consistently assert the principles of democracy and rule of law, including equality of all people in their dignity and rights. We believe that a society can be achieved in everyone can access justice irrespective of colour, ethnicity, religion, health status, sexual orientation, age, social status, political convictions, or worldview. We exercise the right to judicial and other legal protection on behalf of our clients, individuals injured by bias violence.
The activities of In IUSTITIA are currently based on three pillars:
- Providing social and legal assistance to concrete individuals exposed to or at risk of bias violence as a comprehensive and long-term service offered throughout the Czech Republic. Through these services, we strive to improve injured parties’ access to justice but also to provide them with sufficient information and support to empower them to understand their situation and manage it on their own. In the Czech context, this service is unique in terms of focus and coverage (e.g. free legal representation).
- Educating professionals and at-risk communities, typically on the topic of bias violence, rights of victims, working with victims, active bystander, prejudice, etc. We currently offer five MoLSA-accredited courses for social workers covering topics very few Czech organizations work with, e.g. victim security and media relations, online hate speech. We also educate criminal justice authorities and other professionals working with victims of crime.
The staff and external collaborators of In IUSTITIA get published on the topics of victims, security, bias violence.
- Monitoring, research, and systemic changes: We monitor bias violence and publish reports to create the most comprehensive overview of bias violence and make it available to international as well as domestic readers. We also conduct victimological research. In addition to publishing our research results, we use them in assisting individuals and educating professionals. Some of the research evidence underlies legislative changes and measures to optimize practices in the field of bias violence and care for victims of crime. As part of our effort to expand prevention, promote adequate solutions of bias incidents, and help victims exercise their rights, we cooperate with the public administration in improving legislation and the practices of bodies responsible for addressing bias violence. At the international level, we collaborate within the European Network Against Racism (ENAR). In addition to our ENAR membership, our staff serves on advisory bodies in the public administration.
